The Littlecactus-byo Care Guide

Watering, light, soil, and troubleshooting — the simple routine that keeps your succulents, cacti, and mesembs happy for years.

The basics

Four rules for thriving plants

Master these and you're 90% of the way there.

Water less, not more

Succulents store water in their leaves and stems — they thrive on neglect. Wait until the soil is completely dry, then water deeply and let it drain. In winter, most just need a light drink every few weeks.

Give them bright light

Most succulents want bright, indirect sunlight or a few hours of gentle morning sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal. Too little light makes them stretch (etiolate) and lose colour.

Keep it comfortable

Succulents prefer temperatures roughly 18–27°C. They tolerate warmth well; just keep them away from frost, cold draughts, and very intense afternoon heat.

Use sandy, well-draining soil

A gritty cactus/succulent mix works best — the roots must never sit in water. Add perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to improve drainage and prevent rot.

By species

Care that fits each plant

Different groups have different rhythms. Quick reference below.

Succulents

Fleshy leaves that store water — forgiving and low-maintenance.

Light
Bright, indirect light; a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal.
Water
Soak only when soil is fully dry — about every 1–2 weeks in summer, far less in winter.
Soil
Well-draining succulent mix with perlite or coarse sand.

Cacti

Desert natives that love heat and hate excess water.

Light
Direct sun is welcome — south- or west-facing windows work well.
Water
Let the soil dry completely between waterings; in winter, water very sparingly.
Soil
Gritty, sharply-draining cactus mix. Avoid soggy bases.

Mesembs (Living Stones)

Pebble-like succulents that rest in cycles — water rhythm matters.

Light
Bright light, away from humid, dim corners.
Water
Water in the growing season only when the inner pair looks slightly shrivelled; keep nearly dry while the plant is resting.
Soil
Very gritty, fast-draining mix — they dislike prolonged moisture.

Carnivorous Plants

Flytraps & pitcher plants — the curious exceptions.

Light
Lots of bright light to keep traps colourful.
Water
Keep soil moist with rain or distilled water — never tap water.
Soil
Sphagnum peat / moss based, low in nutrients.
Troubleshooting

Most problems come from water & light

Here's how to read common signs and set things right.

Leaves going mushy / translucent

Overwatering

Stop watering, let the soil dry out fully, and repot into a drier, grittier mix if root rot has set in.

Plant stretched and leaning toward light

Not enough light

Move to a brighter spot and rotate the pot weekly for even growth.

Shrivelled, soft, or wrinkly leaves

Underwatering

Give a deep soak; plumpness should return within a day or two.

Brown, corky spots or sunburn

Too much harsh sun

Ease it gradually into brighter light and avoid long mid-afternoon exposure.

Fine webbing or tiny specks

Pests (e.g. spider mites)

Isolate the plant, wipe leaves, and treat with a gentle insecticidal soap or neem.
